These days a new digital book about Deep purple is released. It’s written by Cecilio
Toledo, from the Deep Purple’s Official Spanish Fan Club (CADP).
This book presents the different single recordings released by Deep Purple
during all these years and it covers releases from different countries. There
are many books about Purple’s live
recordings, but there’s less information about the group’s singles catalog and this book is perfect to document this. Let it
be Cecilio himself who explains in
his own words the motivations to write this book.
“After World War
II Columbia Records introduced a new
phonographic format called LP (for "long-play") in two sizes, 10 and
12 inches, playing at 33 1⁄3
rpm and made of vinyl plastic. A year later the company RCA
Victor presented a 7" disc that could contain approximately 8 minutes
of recording by side, playing at 45 rpm. The two formats quickly became
popular, and record companies were hesitant about what size to choose. This
period, known as the "War of the Speeds", ended when Capitol and Decca
released their first LP in 1949. Formerly, in 1950, RCA gave in and released its first
Long Play. A year later, Columbia also started publishing 7-inch discs.
The RCA format was then used as a complement to the albums, a promotion
that advanced some outstanding song as a claim for the purchase of the LP. In
the case of Deep Purple they offered unpublished cuts, alternative
versions or songs that would not be published in another format.
When I started to
collect Deep Purple recordings, I was surprised by the fact that their
singles’ cover’s varied radically depending on the country they were made on.
And so I started to collect the images.
This book is the
result of my findings. I have tried to collect all possible images, covers,
back covers and central labels. Many times labels have a different design,
depending on the edition. Some are obvious (typeface, change of logo, colour or
design) but frequently it only consists of a minimal variation, almost
imperceptible (in some cases it is only a dot after a word). All the variations
that I’ve found are here too.
I couldn’t obtain
all the images (usually labels), either because the country was complicated to
reference or because it was from one of the multiple editions that could have
specific releases.
I have also
included maxi-singles, flexi discs and some other quite rare formats. I have
considered them as a single because they fulfill the criteria of containing one
or two tracks on each side. A-side’s tracks appear totally in upper-case
letters to differentiate them from B-side’s tracks”. *
So for all of us
who love this whole thing, we have here an essential book that will surely
bring light and hours of entertainment. Here's the link to purchase it:
